ChainCraft wins Industry Innovators Award 2025 with circular chemistry
The Dutch biotechnology company ChainCraft was announced as the winner of the Industry Innovators Award 2025 on Thursday during the ISPT conference in Groningen. The award, presented by TKI Energy and Industry, recognizes groundbreaking innovations in sustainable process and energy technology. The other finalists were Tibo Energy, Gradyent.ai, and SeaO2.
ChainCraft has developed a unique fermentation technology that converts organic waste streams, such as vegetable and fruit waste, into medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) at its demonstration plant in Amsterdam. These fatty acids provide sustainable alternatives to fossil- and palm oil-based raw materials and are used in applications such as animal feed, lubricants, and coatings.

In 2022, the company raised €11 million to scale up production and build a commercial factory in the northern Netherlands.
Now, the company is conducting a new funding round to raise as much as €100 million for further scaling, announced Maurice Oltheten, Head of R&D at ChainCraft, who accepted the award. A concrete example of ChainCraft’s circular approach is the CIVA project, a collaboration with Royal Avebe. In this project, potato juice, a by-product from the potato processing industry, is converted into sustainable fatty acids.
